The word ‘sex’ is a biological concept and it doesn’t create inequality whereas the word ‘Gender’ is a social concept which brings inequality.

Indian society being a Patriarchy, Gender discrimination crept into the Indian society years ago. The society puts forward various hurdles and obstacles for women in the form of -----

  • Physical and social Harassment

  • High Mortality Infanticide, Surrogacy

  • Restricted Rights and freedom

  • Discrimination at workplace

  • Safety challenges

  • Double load

  • Ego of Male Counterpart

  • Men and women have equal contribution informing a healthy society. So they should be brought to the same level for efficient growth and development. Hence Women empowerment is a must phenomenon in the current scenario.

Dowry Prohibition Act 1961 could not serve cent percent of its motive as the custom of dowry prevails in changed form like exchange of Gold and gifts.

The way for ward are

  • Brides family should refuse dowry and should spend on girls’ education.

  • Grooms family should also refuse it and develop the ethics of empowerment.

  • Bride and groom should not submit to the demand of their parents.

  • Women should be financially independent through education and opportunities.

Domestic Violence Act 2005 served its motive to a great extent but still in various remote places violence prevails. It is necessary to sensitize the society and bring in the light of education.

Problems related with the working women were solved to some extent by Redressal Act 2013 and Maternity Relief Act 2016. Steps such as pink police force, Women Helpline-1090, Bharatiya Mahila Bank, Hamari Beti Aapki beti, Rajshee Scheme, Matritya Suraksha, Nirbhaya Fund, etc are worth mentioning.

In spite of all such acts and schemes, the condition of an average women is critical. Rape- Either Marital or non-Marital is a common Phenomenon Now-a-days.We worship the ‘DEVI” and on the other hand we treat women like toys. Such mentality needs to be changed. Until and unless an ethical, mental and spiritual change is brought within us, the concept of women empowerment cannot be achieved to its fullest. Men and women should join hand and build a healthy and congenial “’Just Society”.
